Diplomas

I finally got my diploma from Eastern which was this whole drama. They sent it to me via UPS but they required a signature. I only got the last notice of a final delivery. Luckily I found the other notices in the bushes because I was all set to call UPS and bitch them out. There were some pretty wet and windy days so the notices must have blown off my door. I ended up having to stop by campus to pick it up myself.

I kind of wondered why they insisted on sending it signature required because who would steal a diploma? I mean, it isnt like it would have any kind of value to someone else. It has my name on it after all. That got me thinking so as a joke, I xeroxed it and then whited out my name and wrote my name back in with a black sharpie so it would look extra fake. But that was just something silly to do with it.

I ended up throwing the thing into the trunk of my car. That is where it is now. I cant think of a thing to do with it. I suppose I could throw it into a drawer or something. That is what I did with my high school diploma. It seems kind of pretentious to display it although part of me wants to because I get happy every time I look at it since it means no more school for me.

Anyways, I am just curious. To those of you who have earned some sort of diploma, what did you do with it. Where is it now? Do you think it is pretentious to display it?

At one point I planned to display mine in my office. Pretty much the only one who would see it there was me, but I wanted to remind myself that at some point I did indeed manage to persuade someone I was smart. Eventually I decided that was silly.

Now I sort of tilt toward the opposite side. I have a bookshelf of professional books on my desk at work, but I also make a point to keep a copy of "Are You My Mother?" there as well. If people ask I say that I want to have at least one book I actually understand.

Are You My Mother? was one of my favorite books when I was a kid. I love the idea of keeping a copy for the reason you mentioned :) I might have to go buy a copy of The Monster at the End of This Book for just that purpose.

I do not think it is pretentious to display your diploma ~ it is yours and you earned it and should be very proud. Not everyone has one. As you said, at least when you look at it you can think "yippee, no more school!"
((hugs))

Remember that guy at work who used to sit next to me that had his IQ hanging up in his cube? That's pretentious. My degree's are stuck in a safe in the closet. I think that it is nice to display them, and some times nice to throw them in a dark hole.

Go on, frame it and hang it up. It represents a gigantic amount of time and work spent.

Why not display your diploma? You earned it! Most of my certificates are framed. I am just too afraid to put holes in my wall to display them.

I think I've got mine packed up in a box somewhere, not sure which closet it is in. If I had some kind of useful degree, like counseling or such, other then a degree in how to run a park I would have it displayed on my office wall (if I had an office). I will admit I did keep it out on a shelf for a while after I graduated so people could see it :D

I am a lawyer, and there seems to be some unwritten rule that lawyers are supposed to display their diplomas. I am also something of an anarchist so I have steadfastly ignored this rule for the past 13 years. I think it is pretentious to display diplomas, and I prefer to display my "Labor Defender" poster from 1930 which says "Release all Class War Prisoners."

I think it can go either way. In other words, I wouldn't think *you* were pretentious if you posted it - but I reserve the right to think that other people *are*. :)
Mine isn't displayed anywhere, and I'm not sure where it is. Increasingly, I deal with people who are all more degreed than I am, so it would actually be the opposite of pretentious.

I have a Ph.D., and I think it's pretentious, so I don't display it. In fact, I never bothered to pick it up because it meant having to pay a library fine that dated back to my first year of grad school!
